Stephanie Nelson let me interrogate her about her book DECEIVED!!!
So when
did you first fall in love with Vampires?
Hmm, that's a tough one. I remember watching Bram Stoker's Dracula when I was younger and I thought it was fascinating. Then I watched Interview with the Vampire and wished they'd make more vampire type movies. My love of the fanged didn't surface though until I read the Sookie Stackhouse books.
What inspired the titles of your books?
I'm not a fan of long titled books. I knew I wanted the Gwen books to be summed up in one word. At the time I didn't realize how difficult summing up an entire book with one word would be. I chose Craved because that was the main problem with the first book--witches blood is craved by the vampires. With book 2, Deceived, I knew there would be betrayal and lies. Deceived was the best way to sum up all of that.
How is your book any different from the books in the same genre on the market today?
Well, I haven't read every single book on the market today. But I hope it's different in a lot of ways. I've read a lot of PNR books and most the humans either don't know the supernaturals exist, or they do. I've never read a book where the humans know about them but demand segregation. I think about our history as a country and how naive and ignorant we are of those we don't understand. If supernaturals were to step out of the closet they wouldn't be accepted with open arms. This is why I set up my book the way I did.
I have read both your books in the series but I want to know how did you husband feel about you writing about insanely hot vampire sex? Lol
Haha, well I was a bit nervous about him reading the sexy scenes, but sex is human, and obviously supernatural, nature. To be embarrassed by it seems silly. I asked my husband what he thought of the books afterwards and he just smiled and said, "They were hot!" Men, right?
Are you ever going to branch out from PNR?
I don't see that happening. I can't say it won't ever happen but I fell in love with books through PNR, and it's what started my writing journey. I am finding writing about the supernatural exciting. I'm not sure I could find that with another genre.
What was the last book you read?
Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins
what can we expect from Gwen in the future?
I wish I knew. I don't plot out my books so the story lines are just as surprising to me as they are to my readers. I hope she finds happiness and acceptance with who she is.
You recently released taming the wolf, (Which is excellent by the way) what made you start a new series while you have a solid series in the Gwen Sparks series? I have so many books started that I wish I could stop the clock for and finish, but Anna was the strongest. Her voice came through loud and clear, "Write my book!" I was writing Gwen's 2nd book when Anna's story popped into my head. The story line was so strong I couldn't refuse it. I began writing and connected with it so much that I knew I had to publish it. Writing two series may be a little tougher, but I'm super excited for the challenge.
You are a rock star in the book cover world do you think you may give up writing for covers?
Thank you. I really enjoy designing book covers but I love writing more. I will never stop writing books and solely focus on covers. Doing book covers is a fun way to take a break from my writing when it gets a little frustrating.
